  • Career Advice for Market Research

The top tip for any graduate looking for a career in market research is to do your research: Find out which companies youd really like to work for and be very specific, and ignore the jobs that arent what you want so you can put all your time, effort and energies into researching this vacancy. The most desirable employers in the market research sector tend to be either the larger companies or the niche market research companies. There are advantages to both, as a larger company will expose you to several markets and industry but a smaller niche company will expose you to closer client relationship and more a in depth approach.

That's borne out in the list of the world's biggest arms exporters where China has now overtaken France and Germany sitting behind the world's top two the United St...

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Ask Cheeky. I'm Isaiah Hankel, with Cheeky Scientist, and this week's question is from Merve Clark. The question is, "I'm doing a second postdoc, the experience of which turned into hell for me." All right, so not good. "I'm interested in transitioning in my career into the healthcare industry with clinical research." They want to get into clinical research and positions related to MSL positions, so a Medical Science Liaison position. "Since I have no experience in either I've been having a hard time finding the right position." This might sound familiar to a lot of you, we've had a lot of questions on this, right? No industry experience, how do get an industry job? The question goes on, "Because I don't have the experience, I have been applying to entry-level positions or trainee positions. This time my PhD gets in the way because it over-qualifies me for entry-level positions. How do I break away from this vicious cycle?" The problem here is that Merve is applying to positions at one level, that require industry experience and not getting into these positions because she doesn't have any industry experience. Then she's also applying to another level of positions in which she thinks she's over-qualified for. These entry-level positions that might just ask for an MS degree. First we have to break down some misconceptions here. Every position you apply to, it's going to ask for industry experience. Job postings are just hiring manager wishlists, they're templates so you're going to see at the very least, two to five years of industry experience required. Of course, PhDs are getting jobs out of academia into industry. How are they doing this without industry experience? It's because industry experience is not required, it's always just going to be asked for so you should still apply to these positions because you could still get into them. Especially for MSL positions. MSL positions are very hot right now. Medical Science Liaison positions, PhDs are being hired into this. This year alone, in our association we've had three, four, five hired into MSL positions. I think we have two or three that are at Bristol-Myers Squibb alone. Big companies are hiring into this position. It's something that if you know how to apply, if you network and actually get referrals you can actually get into this right out of academia. The second part of that question is, okay, what if I'm over-qualified? We've also had a lot of associates, we've done polls, we work with hiring managers, recruiters and we see over and over again that PhDs, when they apply to these positions that they might be over-qualified for or that just ask for an MS degree. They come in and if they do a great job on the interview and the company really wants them, right? Because no company is going to turn down a great job candidate. They will make positions for them and that's what happens. We see PhDs going into these positions where they might be a little bit over-qualified for them. So what does the company do? They create a new position. It might be from XYZ Manager to Senior XYZ Manager. It might be an R & D or a bench position, they might go from a Research Scientist position to a Research Scientist 2 or a Research Scientist 3, or Senior Research Scientist. Just as an example. If it's a technical sales specialist they might be called a Senior Technical Sales Specialist because of that PhD. Very often they'll get paid higher as well so you should still apply to positions that ask for industry experience, where you might think you're not quite there yet, they're too high. Apply to those positions that might seem below you as well, that you think that you're over-qualified for. Apply to them, go on the interviews. Go through the whole process. Make them want you bad enough and they could create a position for you or you might just get into that dream job that you want. Whether it's a Medical Science Liaison or anything else. Until next time, remember your value as a PhD and continue thinking and acting like a successful industry professional.

British scientist shares the Nobel for medicine for his stem cell research and recalls being told to give up science at school. Full Story: As a young man, John B. Gurdon was told by his schoolmaster to avoid science. It was quite the blow for someone with a burgeoning interest in becoming a scientist. [John B. Gurdon, Nobel Prize Winning Scientist]: "The schoolmaster wrote the report, the main gist of it was that he had heard that Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea, because there was no hope whatever of my doing science and anytime spent on it would be a total waste of time, both on my part and the part of the person having to teach him. So that completely terminated my science at school." Decades later, Gurdon heads the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge, and, as of today, is a Nobel Prize winning researcher. On Monday, both he and a Japanese scientist from Kyoto University split the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work related to cellular reprogramming. The recognition is just another point in what has become a 50 year journey for the two. The 79-year-old Briton began experimenting with cells in the 1950s and in 1962, he became the first scientist to clone an animal. In an audacious attempt, he successfully grew a healthy tadpole from an egg of the frog using the DNA of another tadpole's intestinal cell. It was the same year that Shinya Yamanaka was born. He would build on Gurdon's research, and in 2006, Yamanaka showed that it was possible to reprogram mature cells into stem cells, paving a way for stem cell treatments without the controversial destruction of human embryos. [John B. Gurdon, Gurdon Institute]: "One of the points I would like to make is that this work I was involved in had no obvious therapeutic benefit at all. It was kind of purely a scientific question: Do all our cells have the same genes? There was no prospect of that being useful to people. But I think it is crucial in this country that we are able to support basic research and then you wait a while and sometimes a long while and it then turns out that nearly all discoveries of a basic scientific nature will turn out to have some useful consequence." And he plans on continuing his work, envisioning that he will funnel his share of the $1.2 million dollar prize money back into research. Gurdon still has that schoolmaster's report, framed on his desk. Perhaps it serves as a bit of motivation, though it's doubtful he needs it to continue researching a field he loves. Do you know who your competitors are? How much do you know about the market you serve? In this video, I share three top strategies you can leverage in your business to get ahead of your competition as fast as possible. Are you an entrepreneur? In hindsight, it should’ve been a huge success since it was a vacation rental website. Yep, like AirBNB or VRBO. And with the first mover advantage (I started it in 1999) I should’ve been primed for success. But I wasn’t. And 6 months later the project was dead. So what did I do wrong? I didn’t understand the market. I just coded. No research. No strategy. Maybe you’ve made the same mistake. The worst part is I didn’t learn my lesson after that company failed. I did it again with NBHost.com - a web hosting company. We spent $$$ buying servers and software with NO understanding of the market. That shifted when I started Spheric Technologies, the company that eventually worked. What changed? I decided to hire a business student from a local university to help me conduct market research. They told me EXACTLY where my ideal customers were located, and some of the major challenges they were currently facing. That company grew by 150% year over year to over 30 employees before being acquired 4 years later. So that’s what I want share in this weeks video... ... how to conduct world-class market research at little to no cost, that’s not boring to read and is quick to act on. In this video, I go over 3 strategies to help you research your market faster so that you can move on to the fun stuff with greater clarity (pun intended)! 1. Leverage University Students 2. Hire Researchers Online 3. Past Failed/Successful Founders Don’t make the same mistake so many founders - including myself - made when I first got started. Learn who your ideal customer is, what the competitive set looks like and the ideal way to reach out to them. Get some help! Here’s to learning like a pro! With gratitude, – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/KCEWgq8S9gM ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away.

New figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute show just how much arms sales have been growing - with a 14 percent rise in the last five years compared to the previous five years. Countries in Asia and the Middle East are the biggest buyers - India and Saudi Arabia are first and second. Currently at war with forces across the border in Yemen Saudi arms imports almost trebled compared with the period between 2006 and 2010. China remains in the top three though interestingly its share has decreased quite dramatically as Beijing continues to pour money into developing its own arms manufacturing industry. That's borne out in the list of the world's biggest arms exporters where China has now overtaken France and Germany sitting behind the world's top two the United States and Russia. So what does it all mean for world security? Presenter: Mike Hanna Pieter Wezeman - Senior researcher in the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's Arms and Military Expenditure Programme Manoj Joshi - Head of the National Security Programme for the Observer Research Foundation Tomas Baum - Director of the Flemish Peace Institute an independent parliamentary research institute - Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check out our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/
