(August, 2016) Peter Michael Ketcham, a former employee of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) began looking into the reports his agency had released years earlier on the collapse of the World Trade Center. What he found shook him to the core. In this poignant half-hour interview, Peter Michael Ketcham tells his story of discovering that the organization where he had worked for 14 years had deliberately suppressed the truth about the most pivotal event of the 21st century. Through his willingness to look openly at what he failed to see in front of him for 15 years, Mr. Ketcham inspires us to believe that we can all muster the courage to confront the truth — and, in so doing, finally heal the wounds of 9/11. In hindsight, it should’ve been a huge success since it was a vacation rental website. Yep, like AirBNB or VRBO. And with the first mover advantage (I started it in 1999) I should’ve been primed for success. But I wasn’t. And 6 months later the project was dead. So what did I do wrong? I didn’t understand the market. I just coded. No research. No strategy. Maybe you’ve made the same mistake. The worst part is I didn’t learn my lesson after that company failed. I did it again with NBHost.com - a web hosting company. We spent $$$ buying servers and software with NO understanding of the market. That shifted when I started Spheric Technologies, the company that eventually worked. What changed? I decided to hire a business student from a local university to help me conduct market research. They told me EXACTLY where my ideal customers were located, and some of the major challenges they were currently facing. That company grew by 150% year over year to over 30 employees before being acquired 4 years later. So that’s what I want share in this weeks video... ... how to conduct world-class market research at little to no cost, that’s not boring to read and is quick to act on. In this video, I go over 3 strategies to help you research your market faster so that you can move on to the fun stuff with greater clarity (pun intended)! 1. Leverage University Students 2. Hire Researchers Online 3. Past Failed/Successful Founders Don’t make the same mistake so many founders - including myself - made when I first got started. Learn who your ideal customer is, what the competitive set looks like and the ideal way to reach out to them. Get some help! Here’s to learning like a pro! With gratitude, – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/KCEWgq8S9gM ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away. British scientist shares the Nobel for medicine for his stem cell research and recalls being told to give up science at school. Full Story: As a young man, John B. Gurdon was told by his schoolmaster to avoid science. It was quite the blow for someone with a burgeoning interest in becoming a scientist. [John B. Gurdon, Nobel Prize Winning Scientist]: "The schoolmaster wrote the report, the main gist of it was that he had heard that Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea, because there was no hope whatever of my doing science and anytime spent on it would be a total waste of time, both on my part and the part of the person having to teach him. So that completely terminated my science at school." Decades later, Gurdon heads the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge, and, as of today, is a Nobel Prize winning researcher. On Monday, both he and a Japanese scientist from Kyoto University split the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work related to cellular reprogramming. The recognition is just another point in what has become a 50 year journey for the two. The 79-year-old Briton began experimenting with cells in the 1950s and in 1962, he became the first scientist to clone an animal. In an audacious attempt, he successfully grew a healthy tadpole from an egg of the frog using the DNA of another tadpole's intestinal cell. It was the same year that Shinya Yamanaka was born. He would build on Gurdon's research, and in 2006, Yamanaka showed that it was possible to reprogram mature cells into stem cells, paving a way for stem cell treatments without the controversial destruction of human embryos. [John B. Gurdon, Gurdon Institute]: "One of the points I would like to make is that this work I was involved in had no obvious therapeutic benefit at all. It was kind of purely a scientific question: Do all our cells have the same genes? There was no prospect of that being useful to people. But I think it is crucial in this country that we are able to support basic research and then you wait a while and sometimes a long while and it then turns out that nearly all discoveries of a basic scientific nature will turn out to have some useful consequence." And he plans on continuing his work, envisioning that he will funnel his share of the $1.2 million dollar prize money back into research. Gurdon still has that schoolmaster's report, framed on his desk. Perhaps it serves as a bit of motivation, though it's doubtful he needs it to continue researching a field he loves. Google Tech Talk July 31, 2013 Ph.D.'s at Google: The Embedded Approach to Research Research at Google is unique, as it is conducted across the entire Engineering organization, following a hybrid approach. This approach allows our discoveries to affect the world, both through improving Google products and services which reach the user directly, as well as through the broader advancement of scientific knowledge. Google employs thousands of PhDs throughout the company, where any single product area likely has more PhDs than does all of the Research organization.
